Advanced Materials for Optics

The micro resist technology GmbH extended its product range by a new class of materials: the ORMOCER®s (inorganic-organic hybrid polymers).

These advanced materials are produced under a licence of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung in Germany. Oligomers with an inorganic core are synthesised from organically modified alkoxysilanes. Then their organic functional groups can be crosslinked e.g. by lithographic methods.

Caused by this inorganic-organic network the properties of the ORMOCER®-materials like hardness, thermal and chemical stability are between the properties of inorganic ceramics or glasses and of organic polymers. The materials produced at the micro resist technology GmbH are applied especially for the manufacturing of planar optical waveguides and in micro-optics e.g. for micro-lenses. In particular, the refractive index can be adapted according to the demand of the user and can be varied in a wide range. The requested ORMOCER®-pattern can be fabricated by photo imaging as well as by UV imprinting technologies. The size of the oligomers is in the nanometer-range. With that, the pattern resolution is only limited by the equipment available at the user. Components in the µm-range were already successfully replicated.
